About the Role
As the Senior Engineering Manager, AI, you will be responsible for the execution of key AI initiatives at Hinge Health. From overseeing scientists responsible for AI conceptual design and model training & fine-tuning, to an engineering team responsible for deploying AI solutions and features at scale, you will be a key driving force in the organization. You will be communicating and coordinating with senior leadership, product management, care team operations, as well as across all three physical locations - San Francisco HQ, Montreal, Canada, and Bangalore, India.
In addition to being directly responsible for key AI initiatives, which lean heavily on the leading edge of Generative AI tech, you will be responsible for enabling many other teams in implementing their AI visions. You will do this through driving education and consultation initiatives with the many R&D teams at the company. This position is seen as mission critical for the company, and you will be a key player in improving the lives of millions of people through the targeted use of AI.
As a hands-on engineering leader, you’re expected to stay close to the technology: understanding your team’s full stack, contributing code, and regularly reviewing and merging pull requests (~15% of your time).
This role includes close collaboration with our Montreal team and will involve occasional travel.
What You’ll Accomplish
Solve for cutting edge use cases in the healthcare domain ranging from personalizing our digital physiotherapy platform using AI/ML technologies, to creating reusable AI components as a platform to enable faster implementation of AI solutions throughout the product suite
Contribute to, and execute, AI roadmaps and AI vision, with your product management partner and executive stakeholders, as the technical partner developing a technical strategy that supports our AI vision.
Ensure that proposed AI solution architectures are sound and can run at the scale required by the business. Knowing what questions to ask to determine ROI, budget, and development efforts, as well as critiquing architectures and counter-proposing alternatives with sound reasoning to create stakeholder buy-in
Introduce AI innovations and drive our AI Science team on the leading edge of AI
DevOps for key AI services (MLOps) - conforming to Hinge Health Operational Excellence standards, while establishing extensions to the standard for new AI service types.
Build a collaborative environment across a diverse set of opinionated technical staff, with an ability to influence and negotiate across teams on allocation of resources and to deliver what is effectively the right thing for the organization. Knows when to escalate appropriately and acts with a sense of urgency.
Hinge Health Hybrid Model
We believe that remote work and in-person work have their own advantages and disadvantages, and we want to be able to leverage the best of both worlds. Employees in hybrid roles are required to be in the office 3 days per week, for the full 8 hours of a typical business day. The San Francisco office has a dog-friendly workplace program.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Engineering
5+ years of experience managing a team of 6+ technologists (a mix of engineers and ML researchers/scientists)
5+ years of experience building and deploying ML solutions at scale (thousands to millions of DAU)
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree or better in a Machine Learning field
2+ years experience in building and deploying Generative AI-based solutions
Experience in the field of digital health care, with exposure to US Protected Health Information regulations
2+ years experience in fine-tuning large language models, managing and manipulating large datasets for ML model training and evaluation
4+ years of experience in python, TypeScript, Nestjs, GraphQL, Node.js, relational (e.g., SQL) databases, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS services (incl. AI/ML-related), Redis and workflow trunk-based CI/CD
Compensation
This position will have an annual salary, plus equity and benefits. Please note the annual salary range is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location. The annual salary range for this position is $250,800 - $376,200.
